On 4 June 1942, something seemingly unspectacular happened on Akutan Island. IJN pilot Tadayoshi Koga was hit by ground fire during a mission over Dutch Harbour and crashed his A6M2 Model 21 Zero. Unfortunately, Koga did not survive the crash, but his aircraft did. It was to go down in history as the “Akutan Zero” or “Koga’s Zero” and had a significant impact on the course of the war in the Pacific.
